How Do Oppossums Survive in The City

Opossums are rodents that inhabit cities all over the world. Opossums are not picky eaters and will consume almost anything; they eat anything from a carcass to table scraps. Opossums have a particular fondness for cat food. Opossum usually eat road kill and from trash cans in neighborhoods and cities. So, as you can see, opossums are just like any other scavenger in nature.

Opossums usually are seen more in rural areas. But in this day in age they are starting to infest cities all over the world. Scientists are working on finding an answer to this growing problem, opossums most people say, look like an oversized rat with a white face, pink eyes, and a long thin tail, compared to a rat tail, opossums to get as tall as a large house cat. Opossums are nocturnal, they are notorious for knocking over neighborhood trash cans and causing the owner a big mess to be cleaned up in the morning. Opossums are also known to eat small pets when their owners let them out in the yard.

Where They Live Inside a City

Most people believe opossums to live and sleep in trees, but contrary to this belief opossums will live on the ground in a den they have taken over on the ground after the previous owner has vacated it. Opossums are the only marsupial in North America. Opossums also have opposable thumbs, meaning they can grip just like a human being.

Opossums in the city can be dangerous to the people living in them. Opossums have been known in the past to carry many diseases such as rabies. So, next time you walk outside at night and see your uninvited guest just walk away and do not confront them, opossums have been knowing to bite humans.
